Origami Colored Pencil Icons

Origami is one of our very popular icon sets. We released the free set a few months ago, we released a full set as well. Here we are glad to present another free icon set based on this design, but this time, they have been transferred into an icon set with colored pencil sketch style, which is becoming more and more popular in web designs and developments. We produced the icons in four colors. In total, there are 160 icons coming in 32-bit transparent PNG format and in four different sizes (32 pixels up to 256 pixels). If you want to color them in a unique color that matches your design, just let us know your color code, we can do it for you.

The icon set is free for both commercial and personal use. However, resell is not allowed. If you are interested in integrating these icons into your commercial web templates or themes that are for sale, please contact us for an extended license.

Chocolate Hearts is a set of free vector icons for you as Valentine is coming soon. Here we gladly produced you 12 nice chocolate icons for you to celebrate the Valentine with your love. You can use them to decorate your post card, e-card, email messages, web site etc.

It is complete free for personal use. As this set of icon is drawn from Hotel Chocolate real Valentine Gift Collection (Melting Chocolate Hearts), commercial usage might not be proper. Here we produced 12 icons of different sizes in 32-bit transparent PNG format and also we included the vector source file (Adobe Illustrator CS4 format) for you to play with.

Origami Full Set Launched on Icondock

Origami was an icon set that I designed for Icondock a few months ago as a free icon set (see here for the post of free Origami set). Then we decided to expand the free set into a full icon set covering most of the useful illustrative symbols in a playful style. Thanks to Nick La from Icondock, now it is released as a full set under Icondock.

Now Origami full set includes over 200 icons which covers almost all the stuff that can be used in web development or design. It is available in vector set and 32 pixels raster format. You can buy the full set or even individual icons at Icondock and enjoy them in your design projects.

Below we present the full preview of the whole icon set and thanks very much again to Nick La that he provided some very nice sample usage of these icons by adding some effects like shadows and reflections.

Please notice that this is a commercial icon set, you need to purchase license before you can use the set in one of your design projects. Licenses can be purchased on Icondock.

Free Christmas Icon Set – Xmas Festival

There again at Web Designer Depot, a xmas icon set designed by me is published. This set includes 20 free Christmas theme icon in a colorful style. If you enjoyed the previous Xmas Stickers icon set, you’re lucky again, as today we’re bringing you another great set of icons for the Holidays. We call this one “Xmas Festives”.

A Collection of Nice Mini Icon Designs

After the showcase of a collection of 3D icon designs, this time we would like to show something quite small but extremely beautiful. Like I said some of my previous articles, icon designing now has two directions: one is for huge icon designs with a lot of details, the other is for mini icons which are able to save space and give enough information. For example, the sizes of Windows icons, initially in Windows 95 there are only 2 sizes in each icon (16px and 32px). Now Windows 7 has been released, the icon sizes are from 16px to 256px. However, for web design or desktop application design, small icons are somehow still very useful, especially for listings and toolbar buttons.

To me, mini icons are all about sharpness and maintenance of details. Also the consistency of style is important. Here we summarised a number of very nice mini icon sets for you. Most of them are free resources, but please check the author website for the appropriate licensing information before you use them.

Fugue Icons by pinvoke

This is the most impressive mini icon set I have ever seen. Not only the quantity of the icons (2396 icons in this set) but also the details and style. The author is so kind to include the PSD source files in the download pack.

Diagona Icons by pinvoke

This set is from the same author of the above icon set. And in a different style with the same true quality.

Silk Icons by famfamfam

Another big set of icons with extremely good design, the sharpness of icons has been maintained very well.

A set of colourful mini icons with high contrast. Very useful web development toolbar icons. Somehow the link of author is not working. You can download the icon set at Icon Finder.

This is another very large and nice set of mini icons, there are totally 513 icons in high quality which covered almost everything useful in web/desktop designs.

A small but very nice set of mini icons.

Xiao Icons by Delacro

Xiaoin Chinese means small or mini. This is a very nice set of mini icons in various colours by Delacro, a Chinese UI designer.

Some Mini Icons by Double-J Design

At last, I would like to introduce some mini icon designs by myself. Blockie Icon Set is one set of mini icon that I developed for Icondock. There are several versions available for download and purchase. Here I have shown a free version. Shinyis the most recently developed icon set by myself, it is available in 16×16 pxiels as well.

A Free Icon Set Shiny

Here we are pleased to present a set of 20 free icons Shiny. This set has been also published on Icondock as a free icon set. So firstly a big thank to Nick La from Icondock. This free set includes 20 icons that you can use for both personal and commercial projects. Resell and distribution is not allowed. The icons are available in three different sizes: 16px, 32px, and 64px in 32-bits transparent PNG format.

Some of the icons have been used in the new theme of Double-J Design website already. This can be a good example to show that how to use these icons. In this set, designs of different sizes are treated differently, especailly the smallest 16×16 pixels icons. In this way, the sharpness of edges and details have been maintained in small sizes of icons.

A Collection of Beautiful 3D Icon Designs

Double-J Design is focusing on designing stock icons and custom icons for web or desktop applications, printing projects, etc. Also at Double-J Design, you can find loads of free icon sets available for download. Besides doing designs, Double-J Design also reviews a large number icon designs and web/desktop GUI design everyday. Therefore, we write about design tutorials, design ideas and nice collection of good designs. Today we picked up about a number of sets of very nice 3D icon designs which might be useful in the stage of styling or inspiration in your design procedures. Some of them have been featured in a number of design blogs but here what we picked up are all about 3D designs. To me, a good 3D icon set design is all about the consistency of style or perspective. I have discussed some issues in some icon design forum about 3D icon design like what tools they normally use to design 3D icons, how to keep the same style within one set. I would like to hear some feedback or comment on these issues here as well.

Double-J Design Theme V3

It’s has been only around a few months since the last update of the WordPress theme here for Double-J Design. In my opinion, it has been not quite successful. I actually have got plenty of feedback and comments from lots of sources (e.g. comments on Double-J Design, replies on wordpress.org.cn, etc) Most of them are positive and a number of great designers pointed out some critical issues or bugs or problems in the last version of Double-J Design theme (Version 2). For example, browser compatibility problems (mainly about the support of IE6), HTML and CSS mistakes, etc. I didn’t really have time to modify a lot about the old version and I though the design wasn’t too nice as well.

These days, I spent some spare time to redesign and refine an updated version (V3) of Double-J Design WordPress theme. Today, after some initial tests, I am happy to officially change the V2 theme into this new V3 theme.

Here I would like to introduce further more about some of the changes in this version of the WordPress theme design.

New Logo

Firstly, I would like to introduce the new logo of Double-J Design. As Double-J Design is aiming for designing better Icon and GUIs for our clients. So in this logo, a square and a circle are simply being used for representing icon and GUI. Here I use the logo in a dark background then the typographic is in white. There are some variations i.e. simple color version and greyscale version which can be used in different situation like printing or distribution.

Homepage and Individual Blog Page

In this version, the homepage is pretty simple as only the last entry is shown in detail. The most recent five entries are shown in title list. Another section which is called Recent Featured Work has been introduced to show the most recently designed custom project. In the way, space has been saved and the recent featured work has been emphasised.

However, I have to reorganise all the recent design projects and produce some preview images for the recent featured work section. Therefore, this feature is temporarily not available at the moment.

Since only one entry is shown on homepage, I therefore produced a individual blog page for showing more the recent blog articles. Big thanks to Nick from N.Design Studio and Icondock to teach me some of the tricks in WordPress template settings.

Other Features and Effects

Sliding Navigation Menu

Someone suggested me to insert some dynamic or animated element in my blog theme to give it some nice feature. Here I have included one of the popular animated elements sliding navigation menu. This technique is taken from jMar’s blog using jQuery to implement an animated sliding navigation.

Rounded Corner

Rounded corner is a new feature in CSS3. However currently, some browsers have already implemented this technique. For example, Safari 4.0, Google Chrome. Simply insert the following lines in the CSS style sheet. There will be nice and crisp rounder corners.

I haven’t tested in more browsers. But unfortunately, it’s not working in IE (even IE8). And also, this feature is still a new feature which is only implemented in CSS level 3. Therefore the CSS validation on the bottom of this page is taken without this rounded corner feature.

Latest Tweets

I started to use Twitter about half year ago, and now there are around 100 people following Double-J Design (@doublejdesign) on Twitter. So I put a section to show the latest tweets on the footer of our website. Thanks to the WordPress plugin Twitter for Wordpress by Ricardo González. It’s really simple and useful. Here is the final look of this section.

Conclusion

Last time, I actually got a number of complaints that the previous old theme didn’t work in IE6 perfectly. This time, I particularly paid some attention on this. And now, it should be OK in IE6. However, I will be testing this themes for a couple of days and make it into a proper general WordPress theme later on if all the main issued within this version are solved. Therefore your opinion and suggestions once again become very important. Please feel free to write comments on this. I will much appreciate for your advices.

My RSS Icon Set ‘Supra’ Published on WDD

Today, an exclusive RSS icon set design by me which is named “Supra” has been released on Web Designer Depot for free download. There are more than 200 icons and buttons in this set in different colours which can be used in different predefined themes. The icons are provided in both raster and vector formats: The transparent PNG versions are 32×32, 64×64 and 128×128, and we have also included source files for Illustrator so that you can resize and create the icons as needed.

The icons are completely free for personal and commercial use and they’re being released exclusively to all WDD RSS subscribers.To download your copy, simply subscribe to WDD RSS feed and you’ll find the current password at the bottom of each post when viewing the RSS feed.
